hub city logoHub City, located in the Depot District, had excellent beer and food, at least the last time that I was there. You'll need a car to get there (or to be very determined). Here are some links to more detail:

The Tahoka Highway

April 23, 2006 at 11:17 pm (food and drink)

the stripFrom Michael Salvo:
The town of Lubbock is "dry", but it's only a few minutes on the loop to "Lil' Las Vegas," here we can all anonymously buy beer, booze and tamales (Pedro's are the best) at thedrive-through liquor stores. And restaurants and bars sell beer, wine and liquor in Lubbock. never did quite understand how "dry" really translates as "monopoly supplier."

Parking

April 23, 2006 at 11:07 pm (dorm, hotel)

Hotel Parking
If you're staying at the Hawthorn Suites, on the edge of campus, you're about a five-minute walk from the English Building.

Dorm Parking
There is visitor parking about a half-block from the dorms, and metered parking (garage) about
5-6 blocks away. The dorm is the closest residence hall to the English Building.

Passes and Guest Parking
From Rich: I've been wrestling with parking services for passes. Doesn't look good. But, anyone who is driving should let me know and I'll let you know where the free visitor's spots are on campus. Parking on campus free after 5pm and on weekends.

Parking Garage aka The Garage-mahal
From Rich: Nearly all of the buildings on the Lubbock campus are built in "Spanish-Renaissance" style. It's very pretty, actually. Bell towers, but lots of vertical and horizontal lines. Anyway, money being allocated to certain buildings, certain deals made for fairness, and the result isa building that looks like a mini-fortress that's a parking garage.

If visitor parking is full, this is a good option for parking; about 3 blocks from English.

Hawthorn Suites

April 23, 2006 at 11:04 pm (hotel)

The Hawthorn Suites serve as the conference hotel for CW2006. According to the proposal, the rooms are fairly large, and the hotel Web site indicates that many (if not all) rooms include a mini-frig and microwave.

The hotel is about a five minute walk from the English Building, where the sessions will be held.

Stangel Hall Information

April 23, 2006 at 10:47 pm (dorm)

Stangel Hall (map) is actually half of a two-dorm complex, Stangel-Murdough Hall, joined in the middle, lower-level by The Market (see also), a food court. I haven't found information on whether that food court is open during the summer months.

My sources tell me that the rooms are air conditioned, a not unimportant detail in Texas. If you'd like to see what your room could look like were you to really apply yourself check out second place winners of the Best Dressed Space Contest 2005. The Stangel-Murdough Scoop, though dated and for a different audience, provides some additional information about the residence hall.

Dorm Application

April 23, 2006 at 10:32 pm (dorm, official info)

The application for the dorm (Stangel Hall) is short and easy to complete. The only possible difficulty is that the school only accepts checks for payment. So put away your VISA and MasterCard, and find your checkbook.
